12th February 2024 Hiking - Walking: Martlesham Creek Wind Direction: Wind Stength: Surf / Sea State: Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: sunny periods Max Speed: Distance Covered: 3.22 miles (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise) Monday 12th February - walk ***** – Martlesham Church to Kyson Point for a picnnic – sunny periods with light winds:). We have a sunny day here in Suffolk for the second day running, must be due some more rain soon! We agreed to pack a picnic and head over to Martlesham Church to see the snowdrops and crocus flowers but not before a busy morning at home, we made our favourite huge shepards pie, then made a crumble and 8 sponge puddinngs while I did my exercises. Then with lunch made we drove over to Martlesham Church, a popular spot these days especially with the churchyard in full bloom:) Arriving just after 11.30 we both went for our wellies which was a good choice as it was very muddy, in fact we saw a local farmer get his new 4 x 4 stuck in the mud and had to call for a tractor to pull him out! The lovely churchyard was absolutely full of snnowdrops with just a few crocus flowers showing, we were a week too early for them, we will have to go again soon! I took the usual pics of the old church with the flowers, round seat set against a blue sky before taking the path down past the tennis court and lane that leads to the new Suffolk wilds nature reserve but turned left down the hill to Martlesham creek with loads of finches flitting about. It was particularly muddy at the bottom of the hill but wellies are great for splashing through muddy puddies! Then through the little marina at the end of Martlesham creek which is where the path improves as we slowly make our way to the small boatshed at Kyson Point right on the banks of the River Deben with loads of teal about. The tide was high and still coming in as we waded to onne of our favourite picnic spots leaning against the lovely old wooden doors enjoying the peace and quiet and wildlife with flocks of lapwings and godwits plus a lonely curlew. We had a relaxing and delicious lunch as the tide approached and we just had enough time to finnish our cuppa before we had to leave as the water reached our feet! We had to climb over the fennce as it was too deep to walk back along the Deben, in fact the path to Woodbridge was now cut off with high water fast approaching but we had our wellies on so got through it easily:) Then back around the creek, up the muddy steps, along the field and back to our van, another top walk over three miles inn the lovely Suffolk countryside enjoying the sunshine! We took the scenic route along the back lanes which were pretty muddy with some big patches of standing water! Photo Album here |
